Expiry date (design)

The end date of a registered design's protection. Design rights run for a fixed maximum term and need periodic renewal.

A registered design is protected for a fixed initial period — typically five years — and can be renewed in five-year increments up to a jurisdictional maximum: twenty-five years in the European Union, fifteen years (from grant) in the United States, and similar caps elsewhere. After the maximum term, the design enters the public domain and cannot be renewed further. A missed renewal causes the registration to lapse, although most jurisdictions allow a short grace period.
